This luxurious Audi

IS IT REAL? This luxurious Audi hatchback is a concept, but a production version, called the A7, should go on sale in late 2010.
WHAT THEY SAID: The Sportback emerged like a sci-fi vision from thick plumes of stage smoke, a stretched luxury hatchback with no trace of hatchback nerd factor. The “sportback” layout “will be a cornerstone of our future growth” in several vehicle segments, said Rupert Stadler, chairman of Audi AG.
WHAT THEY DIDN’T SAY: Christian Bokich, an Audi spokesman, said that even-numbered Audi models play a more traditional role, leaving odd numbered models — the 3, 5 and now 7 — free to be wilder, sexier and sportier.
WHAT MAKES IT TICK? Concept and production versions share the platform of the A4 and A5, which also underpins the related Lamborghini Estoque sedan. The rear seats fold down, opening up a generous cargo space. The concept was fitted with a 225-horsepower diesel engine, but Americans will be offered gasoline engines as well.
HOW MUCH, HOW SOON? It’s hard to imagine a car this decadent costing much less than $60,000 or even $70,000 when it arrives next year.
HOW’S IT LOOK? From its beechwood interior and snow-white, diamond-quilted seats to its sparkling lines, the lovely A7 — er, Sportback — is destined to be the darling of Rodeo Drive, or anywhere that people shop and preen.
